Dalane Folkemuseum was founded in 1910. For its first few years, the museum was located at Årstad in Egersund. In 1935, the museum relocated to Slettebø, 3 kilometres from Egersund’s city centre. This is where you will find the museum’s administrative building today. The museum's core collection is displayed in district judge Feyer's old country estate, built in the 1850s.

In the museum garden you will find a gazebo from the 1830s. This was refurbished and painted in its original colours in connection with the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian constitution, in 2014.

During World War 2, the Slettebø area housed a large German military encampment. The museum's craftsmanship and agricultural exhibitions are located in buildings from that era.

The museum houses rich and extensive collections at Slettebø. Such as a magnificent collection of cast iron stoves and stove plates from the 17th and 18th centuries, and a collection of agricultural implements and vehicles from the 19th century. In addition, there are several reconstructed workshops displaying crafts such as clockmaker, combmaker, cooper, carpenter, and clog maker.

The museum's facilities at Slettebø also include a schoolhouse from the 1890s and a storehouse from the 18th century. The area was further expanded in 2000, when the museum took over the administration building of the former institution Bakkebø; a building from 1955, designed by Odd Brochmann. Today, this building has been refurbished and houses offices, a photo collection, a library, workshops, an archive, and item storage facilities.
